Interview With M Farag

Describe your product or service:

“A subscription management platform.

A cloud-based subscription and billing platform that empowers subscription-based businesses with operational, analytics and billing tools to efficiently manage their subscribers, taking away the entire overhead of subscriber's lifecycle management from the business and keeping them focused on their core product/service. “

Describe your company values and mission:

“Empowering subscription-based businesses by providing the tools necessary to streamline their operations and scale.”

How are you funded? I.e. type of funding, number of funding rounds, total funding amount.

“Seed stage — total funding USD ~$1.5 million.”

How big is your team? Tell us a little about them (I.e. co-founders, freelancers, etc.)

“Two founders and four full-time employees.”

How did you come up with and validate your startup idea? Tell us the story!

“The idea came up while searching for a solution for myself. I was searching for a subscription management platform to support a new project I was working on, and to my surprise, I didn't find any that would support me being based in the MENA [Middle East and North Africa] region. So I decided to build a MENA-focused subscription management platform. Validation was done by interviewing multiple startups in the region and online research about solutions and products.”

How did you come up with your startup's name? Did you have other names you considered?

“Yes, we brainstormed different names, put them all in a list, then compared based on; availability of domains and social media handles, Googleability, evocability, being a verb.”

Did you always want to start your own business? What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

“Yes, I always take initiative and enjoy solving problems and creating products. So early on in my career and during my corporate days, I was coming up with different solutions, wearing mulitple hats, sort of like intrapreneuring.”

Did you encounter any roadblocks when launching your startup? If so, what were they and what did you do to solve them?

“Sure, it is a bumpy route by nature. For me was finding a co-founder since I started as a solo founder, Fundraising, building the team, and maintaining a performance culture.”

Who is your target market? How did you establish the right market for your startup?

“Subscription Based business in multiple sectors, that is our target market. It is the right market because the tools we provide are of no value to any ecommerce or transactional-based business.”

What's your marketing strategy?

“Market education and domination with inbound and outbound efforts.”

How did you acquire your first 100 customers?

“Network and word of mouth — still ramping up to 100, though.”

What are the key customer metrics / unit economics / KPIs you pay attention to to monitor the health of your business?

“MMR, Growth, CAC and LTV.”

What's your favorite startup book and podcast?

“Multiple books, but ‘The Lean Startup’ was a great mindset orientation. Unfortunately, I don't listen to enough podcasts to have a favorite, although I have a long list.”

What is a song or artist that you listen to for motivation?

“I don't have a specific song or artist. I motivate myself by zeroing in on the target and the next best action as well as micro-accomplishments.”

Is there a tool, app, or resource that you swear by to help run your startup?

“We're always experimenting, but the stack always has Google Workspace, Slack, [and] Zoom.”

What is something that surprised you about entrepreneurship?

“Network[ing] and the people you know is a huge leverage.”

How do you achieve work/life balance as a founder?

“Tough one — I try to maintain a routine of morning exercise and a work-free weekend (usually one day), but I don’t think I'm the most successful in maintaining that balance.”

What is a strategy you use to stay productive and focused?

“Breaking down things into bite-sized tasks, write them down and start executing. Also, motivating my team and delegating is very efficient.”

Did you have to develop any habits that helped lead you to success? If so, what are they?

“Focus, exercise, and emotional intelligence.”

What was your first job and what did it teach you?

“I started working as a freelancer developer. It taught me how to focus on customer satisfaction and sell my services in a way that revolves around each customer.”
