Interview With Daniel Warner

Describe your product or service:

“We created the world's first continuous learning loop for Edge AI deployments. This means your AI will stay up to date and not experience model drift, sensor degradation and even be able to move to a totally new environment/market.”

Describe your company values and mission:

“To realise the true potential of AI and how it can better life on Earth.”

How are you funded? I.e. type of funding, number of funding rounds, total funding amount.

“VC funded, two rounds to date [totaling] $3 million USD.”

How big is your team? Tell us a little about them (I.e. co-founders, freelancers, etc.)

“Eight people total — all full-time and committed to the business.”

How did you come up with and validate your startup idea? Tell us the story!

“The idea came from a military project that Vlad and I were working on: creating more efficient laser-guided systems in poor environments. We realised that the collection and retraining process was long and costly, [and] we also realised that it needed to be much quicker — constant, in fact. LGN was born and stands for the ‘Lateral Geniculate Nucleus,’ the part of your brain that diverts gaze and attention in order for the brain to process what's new and uncertain quickly.”

Did you always want to start your own business? What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

“No. But I got involved with some very early start-ups at the beginning of my career and then started my own 10 years ago. From that moment, I knew I loved the idea of creation of products, value, and culture.”

Feeling inspired? Learn how to launch your company with our guide on how to start a startup.

Did you encounter any roadblocks when launching your startup? If so, what were they and what did you do to solve them?

“Yes, of course, an uncountable amount, just like anyone else. We raised as the global COVID pandemic was taking a grip. We've changed, moved, and worked hard to find our product's right customers and markets.”

Who is your target market? How did you establish the right market for your startup?

“Any organisation deploying AI to the edge at scale in the real world. We work with the automotive, mobility, mining, defence, and agriculture industries.”

What's your marketing strategy?

“At the moment, our customers are finding us through speaking events. We're about to begin our first paid media tests.”

What are the key customer metrics / unit economics / KPIs you pay attention to to monitor the health of your business?

“We think about scale and time to scale for our customers. Our job is to help them win and to win quickly. We are also developing a new industry metric — Learning Speed — which will help companies compare how fast they are adapting to changing environments.”

What's your favorite startup book and podcast?

“‘Shoe Dog’ by Phil Knight.”

What is a song or artist that you listen to for motivation?

“Adele and Eminem.”

What is something that surprised you about entrepreneurship?

“The true and emotional relationships with the team.”

How do you achieve work/life balance as a founder?

“‘Friends’ and ‘Family Guy’ on TV at the end of the day!”

What is a strategy you use to stay productive and focused?

“Wake early, exercise often, eat well, and don't take life too seriously.”

Did you have to develop any habits that helped lead you to success? If so, what are they?

“I swam for the GB youth team most of my younger life. Commitments are second nature to me and were ingrained at a very young age. When I decide to do something, I am relentless until it's achieved.”

What was your first job and what did it teach you?

“I worked for the largest robotics company in the UK. My first manager said something to me that I'll never forget: ‘Some will blow our your candle just to make their own appear brighter.’ I'll never forget it, and I always protect my candle.”
