Interview With Soham Kathuria

Describe your product or service:

“We cater to the mental, social and physical wellbeing of senior citizens on daily basis by organizing different zoom sessions for the 50+. The sessions are conducted by experts who join us from across India. Our sessions are conducted in three categories fitness, learning, and entertainment. Fitness includes sessions like yoga and meditation. Second category of learning helps seniors to cope with the advancing world by teaching them about mobile applications like WhatsApp, Instagram, Uber, and many more. Third and most loved category is entertainment, in which we indulge seniors in various fun activities like Singing, Dancing, Tambola, and Quizzes. And we do it all through online zoom. To add a cherry on top, we also organize open mics for our seniors where they can talk their heart out and have a chit chat with their fellow members.”

Describe your company values and mission:

“Our vision is to build the happiest community of senior citizens, and our mission is to empower senior citizens by making them more productive and engaged in the second innings of their lives.”

How big is your team? Tell us a little about them!

“We have three co-founders working along with more than 15 interns. Soham Kathuria has completed a MBA and is presently CEO of the company. Rakshit Sharma is a Head Of Technology and has done BTech. He comes with more than 2.5 years of experience in HSBC Bank as Senior Software Developer.”

How did you come up with and validate your startup idea? Tell us the story!

“In COVID-19, our founder Soham Kathuria was sitting with his mother Anu Kathuria, and the latter was asking questions regarding Instagram. It was then [that] the idea popped up to start teaching mobile applications to seniors online as there will be lots of them facing the same problem. Thus in August 2020, we started GoIndpendent, only to teach mobile applications, but then we shifted towards other sessions also, like fun and fitness, as seniors were interested in the same. Seniors from all over India started joining our sessions and paying per session. 

So finally in June 2021, we officially started GoHappy Club: India Ka Sabse Khush Parivar to make the happiest community of senior citizens.”

How did you come up with your startup’s name? Did you have other names you considered?

“Yes. We started with GoIndpendent as in starting we only wanted to make independent so that they are dependent on their children for using smartphones. But then we thought [about] how we could connect fitness, learning, and fun into one name and thought of our ultimate goal, which was giving happiness to a set of people [that] are set aside in the technological era. So the name decided was GoHappy Club.”

Did you always want to start your own business? What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

“Our founder Soham Kathuria always wanted to do business as after a MBA , he was very keen to start something. Being from business background, he always looks solutions for problems around him.”

What was the biggest obstacle you encountered while launching your company? How did you overcome it?

“The biggest obstacle was to believe that seniors will join online to learn about online. Sounds contrary right, but yes were able to overcome and validate the same when seniors from different parts of the world started joining us and sharing their life transforming feedbacks post our sessions.”

Who is your target market? How did you establish the right market for your startup?

“Our target market is 50+ years of age. To be more exact, our target market are people who are :

  1. Getting bored and depressed post their retirement and still wants to be productive and engaged.
  2. Adults and Seniors above 50 years of age who wants to learn new things and they think age is no bar for learning.”

What’s your primary marketing strategy?

“Firstly, In Senior category, Referrals have worked a lot for us. And to use it more effectively, we are launching Refer & Win Feature in our application next month to increase membership through Refer & win.

Secondly, we are also using various Facebook and WhatsApp groups for promotion of our sessions.

Thirdly, We are also collaborating with different clubs to spread about our club.

Lastly, we will be also looking for YouTube and Facebook Ads in near future.”

How did you acquire your first 100 customers?

“First 100 customers were Referrals itself.”

What are the key customer metrics / unit economics / KPIs you pay attention to monitor the health of your business?

“1. No of numbers /App Downloads joining in a month

2. Attendance of members in our sessions

3. Contributions/Revenue of the company received in a month

4. Workshops Revenue received in a month”

What’s your favorite startup book and podcast?

“Favourite startup book is ‘The High-Performance Entrepreneur.’ Favourite Podcast is Intellectual Indies’ ‘Founders Unfiltered.’”

Is there a tool, app, or resource that you swear by to help run your startup?

“Schedule/to-do apps for sure.”

What is something that surprised you about entrepreneurship?

“That marketing is not as easy as it sounds.”

How do you achieve work/life balance as a founder?

“To be honest, there is no work-life balance as of now. But yes, sometimes, I watch movies on weekends.”

When did you know it was time to quit your day job to focus on your startup?

“Both of them are being done by me, Soham Kathuria.”

What was your first job and what did it teach you?

“My first job is the same which I am doing along with this startup. It has taught me a lot of management as I am working as a project manager there too.”
