Interview With Vali Nemetz, Head of Product and Consumer Education at beycome

Describe your product or service:

“Online real estate listing and buying platform.”

Describe your company values and mission:

“We care deeply about empowering people in their real estate experience. We want to give them the tools and confidence to buy and sell their own homes.”

How are you funded? I.e. venture capital, angel investors, etc.

“Angel investors.”

How big is your team? Tell us a little about them (I.e. co-founders, freelancers, etc.)

“10 people. Our founder, Nico, has a passion [for] revolutioniz[ing] the real estate industry. Our team consists of real estate experts paired with incredible programmers and engineers.”

Did you always want to start your own business? What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

“I have always wanted to be at the forefront of change. When I see a problem, I [think] about how to fix it. How to make a system work better.”

How did you come up with your startup idea? How did you decide to actually act on the idea? What gave you confidence that you were on the right track?

“I have a lot of family members in the real estate industry. As the internet started to make homes and marketing more accessible to people, I got the idea to have an online platform to list your home. There are other companies disrupting the real estate industry as well, and that is what has given me the confidence to know we are on the right track.”

How did you come up with your company name? Did you have other names you considered?

“We came up with the name a long time ago. We were thinking that we wanted people to know they can ‘beycome’ their own real estate agent.”

What is the greatest challenge you faced in starting your business, and how did you overcome it?

“The biggest challenge is the real estate industry’s push back. There [are] a lot of real estate agents who feel that we are taking away their jobs.”

Who is your product or service made for? Who is your target market?

“Our target market is people buying or selling homes.”

What’s your marketing strategy?

“We are focused on helping simplify the real estate process. Our marketing strategy involves a lot of education. We want our users to feel like they really know what they are doing and feel confident in the decisions they are making.”

How did you acquire your first 100 customers?

“We started in a small area of Florida. We worked to spread the word organically. Our first 100 customers took about six months, and then we got to 5,000 very quickly. Word has spread fast.”

What are the key customer metrics / unit economics / KPIs you pay attention to to monitor the health of your business?

“We look at user satisfaction as well as successful transactions. Our users are buying or selling something as the end goal. If we can help them accomplish that goal 100% of the time, we are successful.”

What’s your favorite book on entrepreneurship?

“‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.’”

What is your favorite startup or business podcast?

“‘The Tony Robbins Podcast.’”

What is something that surprised you about entrepreneurship?

“There are so many moving parts. You have to really learn what deserves your time and what does not.”

How do you achieve work/life balance as a founder?

“This is very hard. I work out every morning at 6 a.m. and do not check my phone until I am done working out and out of the shower. Then in the evening, I have dinner with my family and do not check on work during that time until the kids are in bed.”

How do you stay motivated?

“I have great people that I have surrounded myself with. I have built a team that inspires me, and I don’t want to let [them] down.”

Did you have to develop any habits that helped lead you to success? If so, what are they?

“Yes. I can tend to be all over the place. I have learned to batch work. I will commit to working on something for a specific period of time and not allow any distractions. No emails/ texts/ calls for a four-hour window while I’m working with a programmer. Then I check emails and respond to each and everyone right there. I don’t put things off.”

What are you most proud of as an entrepreneur?

“I am proud that I took the risk and continue to be excited about what I am doing.”
