Interview With Tony Beltramelli

Describe your product or service:

“Uizard is an online design tool for non-designers — powered by AI.”

Describe your company values and mission:

“Powered by an AI design assistant, Uizard enables entrepreneurs, marketing teams, engineers, and non-designers alike to easily create mobile and web app mockups.

Our ultimate mission is to empower anyone to create digital products, regardless of their design or technical background.”

How are you funded? I.e. venture capital, angel investors, etc.

“Venture capital.”

How big is your team? Tell us a little about them (I.e. co-founders, freelancers, etc.)

“We are 14 people distributed across Europe and with our HQ in Copenhagen, Denmark. We are nine different nationalities and speak 10 different languages. We want to embrace diversity!”

Did you always want to start your own business? What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

Although my co-founders had a clear entrepreneurial spirit for a while, [that] wasn’t the case for me. I have always been building things, creat[ing] side projects, but never with the goal of starting a company. I deeply care about solving problems, and starting a company isn’t the only way to solve a problem. At least, that’s what I thought!

How did you come up with your startup idea? How did you decide to actually act on the idea? What gave you confidence that you were on the right track?

“When I started working on Uizard, my goal was actually to publish machine learning papers and apply for a Ph.D. I was working on that paper called pix2code and received a lot of media attention when I published it on the internet, leading to press coverage on WIRED, The Next Web, and other top tech news. This basically told me that there was probably more to the general idea behind the paper and that it would be a shame not trying to turn this research into a full-fetched product and a company. That’s basically how Uizard started.”

How did you come up with your company name? Did you have other names you considered?

“Our company name is our worst and best decision ever. As in, people are often debating how to pronounce it, which is good because they remember it, but it’s also bad because that means the name is unclear.”

What is the greatest challenge you faced in starting your business, and how did you overcome it?

“Finding ‘Product-Market-Fit’ is super hard and takes time. In retrospect, we should have invited a lot more users in our early private beta to accelerate the pace at which we collected quantitative and qualitative data enabling us to optimize our product and pivot to the right market.”

Who is your product or service made for? Who is your target market?

“Uizard is a design tool for non-designers. Our most active users are startup founders, product managers, consultants, business analysts, engineers, marketing teams, and user experience professionals.”

How did you acquire your first 100 customers?

“Organic word of mouth. From day one, we put a form on our website to let interested people sign-up for updates.”

What are the key customer metrics / unit economics / KPIs you pay attention to to monitor the health of your business?

“Our north star KPI is Recurrent active users. We want to build a product that create[s] continuous value for our customers.”

What is the biggest lesson you learned during your journey?

“Speak with potential customers from day one!”

Who is your support system?

“My co-founders and my family.”

How do you stay motivated?

“By seeing and hearing how our customers gain value from our product! It’s truly humbling and motivating to see that the product you are building creates tangible value for people.”

Did you have to develop any habits that helped lead you to success? If so, what are they?

“Multitasking.”

What are you most proud of as an entrepreneur?

“Every time we get praised by a happy customer!”
