Insights From the Founder of Fintech Startup Shares

Shares founder.

Any entrepreneur can tell you, launching a startup is a learning process. Therefore, one of the best things you can do prior to launching a startup of your own is to learn from those who have blazed the trail. We were fortunate enough to hear some valuable insights during our interview with Benjamin Chemla of Shares that will inspire, motivate, and teach aspiring and established entrepreneurs alike.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

“Having a great idea is the tip of the iceberg, what matters the most is execution. This is where you create the difference.”

What is the greatest challenge you faced in starting your business, and how did you overcome it?

“Any app developer can add-on the social functionality of chats or news feeds as an afterthought, but a fully social user experience is an entirely different brand proposition. The exponential rise of social media’s most successful players comes down to the customer journey, seamless tools that drive engagement, and [creating] experiences between users that can’t be achieved with the mere utility of a social add-on. Getting this right is our biggest challenge at Shares.

Of course, the challenge of [integrating] social [elements] on an investing app carries moderation as well and additional regulatory challenges to solve too. Striking the right balance between social engagement and properly moderated content, alongside curated market insights, complicates [operationalization] of the concept in a space where, like other areas of fintech, technology moves faster than regulation on issues like KYC and AML.”

What is the biggest lesson you learned and what can aspiring entrepreneurs take from it?

“Although the success of a company starts with the WHY, it is made possible by the WHO. My journey as an entrepreneur has shown that success will always be highly dependent on the work culture. I have also learned that the best people managers are humble, empowering and want to be surrounded by more clever people than them.”
