Interview With Julian Nordt

Describe your product or service:

“ENWAY developed the technology platform for high-precision autonomous machines. The company focuses on the fields of software, robotics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. ENWAY's technology allows industrial sweeping machines to independently clean large in and outdoor areas, for example, factories or warehouses. In the field of municipal sweeping, ENWAY pursues the approach to support street cleaners with the help of self-driving machines that react dynamically to obstacles. The autonomous cleaning, battery charging, and emptying of the swept-up materials make sweeping safer, more sustainable, and more efficient.”

Describe your company values and mission:

“ENWAY's aim is to optimize the collaboration between humans and machines so that the sweeping robots take over the physically difficult and sometimes dangerous work from the cleaning staff and make the work more efficient.”

How did you come up with and validate your startup idea? Tell us the story!

“The three ENWAY founders lived in Zurich during their studies. In this Swiss city, which is one of the cleanest in the world, the idea arose to make cities and private spaces cleaner and more livable with the help of autonomous machines.”

Did you always want to start your own business? What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

“All three founders have a computer science background and have many years of experience in management and IT consulting, as well as business expertise. The idea of founding ENWAY came more from the need for such a solution than from the will to found a business. To this day, the focus has tended to be on self-driving passenger transport. But autonomous special vehicles and work machines have at least as much potential for positive changes in industrial and public spaces. It was therefore important for the founders to drive innovations in this area in particular.”

Did you encounter any roadblocks when launching your startup? If so, what were they and what did you do to solve them?

“Of course, there are always challenges that have to be solved. These are primarily related to the hardware or to special needs in the area of application of the robots. In a joint exchange with our partners, it has always been possible to master challenges together. ENWAY's technology grows and gets better in areas with new obstacles or different needs. Therefore, we never see these challenges as a problem but as an opportunity to make our technology and thus all cleaning robots even better.”

Who is your target market? How did you establish the right market for your startup?

“Our autonomous sweepers are primarily used in very large areas as well as in areas that are difficult to access or dangerous. Therefore, large warehouses and logistics centers are typical areas of application, as well as production facilities. The robots can be used indoors as well as outdoors, in most difficult environments, and at marginal times - such as at night or on weekends. This makes self-propelled machines interesting for many industries.”
