Interview With Efrat LaMandre

Describe your product or service:

“Primary care, pediatric care, geriatric care, and integrative medicine.”

Describe your company values and mission:

“Mission

To empower humans across the globe to own their strengths and potential. Our values:

  • We keep it real and we keep our word.
  • We are who we are and we accept you for who you are.
  • We have each other’s backs, and we have yours too.”

How are you funded? I.e. type of funding, number of funding rounds, total funding amount.

“Self-funded.”

How big is your team? Tell us a little about them (I.e. co-founders, freelancers, etc.)

“I am the founder. I have a practice manager, an office manager, four clinicians, and a staff of twelve.”

How did you come up with and validate your startup idea? Tell us the story!

“EG Healthcare

Once I got out of school, I knew I could make a great impact in my community by creating a medical practice that delivers kindness with medicine. We created a medical practice that is inclusive and affordable. In addition to impacting the patients, as the staff grew it became a priority to create a unique work culture for the team. We have created a team of badass women who work hard and have an unbelievable work ethic, and we did that by creating a culture of acceptance — we believe in second-chance employment. We provide small microloans to the women who work here to help them get through difficult times. We created a schedule that allows for a strong work-life balance, and a system of support for the women who work here

The Knew Method

Is an offshoot of EG healthcare that provides integrative medicine for the patients who want more out of their medical care than just diagnosis and disease

Hawk Scribes

Is a newly founded medical scribe company that utilizes scribes from India. It was founded in an effort to empower women in India who can safely work from home as they provide exceptional scribing services to medical clinicians in the US.”

How did you come up with your startup’s name? Did you have other names you considered?

“EG Healthcare (I’m E, my wife is G).

The Knew Method (Because you always KNEW there was a better way).

Hawk Scribes (it’s my wife’s favorite bird).”

Did you always want to start your own business? What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

“I didn’t realize I was meant to be an entrepreneur, but I always had difficulty working for others. I didn’t do well in big institutions like hospitals with all the rules, regulations, committees, etc. I didn’t realize then that all this restlessness meant that I was supposed to do it on my own. Once I started EG, it was clear that owning and running my own business is my calling.”

Did you encounter any roadblocks when launching your startup? If so, what were they and what did you do to solve them?

“OH MY GOD, YES. First of all, I am an NP in a Doctors dominated world. I am a female in a male-dominated world, [and] I am openly gay in a very straight world. So yeah, you could say that. I solved them by owning it and branding it. If that meant that sometimes I got a seat at the table because I filled a minority seat, so be it — at least I’m at the table. I created an inclusive practice in an area where there are none. I took the role of NP and became the president of the NPA statewide and made my family life public on social media. What this created over time is immense support from the community and silenced anyone who didn’t support it. And oh yeah, there was also the roadblock of starting your own business in general.”

Who is your target market? How did you establish the right market for your startup?

“EG Healthcare

The whole family that needs primary care, with a safe space for the LGBTQ community (local business)

The Knew Method

People 45 and up who are looking for a better way to manage their health and are tired of being told it’s in their head (national business)

Hawk Scribes

Medical providers who want to spend more time with patients and less time charting (national business)”

What’s your marketing strategy?

“Social media, SEO”

How did you acquire your first 100 customers?

“Word of mouth”

What are the key customer metrics / unit economics / KPIs you pay attention to to monitor the health of your business?

“EG healthcare

Amount of visits/day/month/year.

The Knew Method

Amount of membership plans sold.

Hawk Scribes

The number of medical offices using our services.”

What’s your favorite startup book and podcast?

What is a song or artist that you listen to for motivation?

“As long as it’s happy and I can dance to it, I’m in.”

Is there a tool, app, or resource that you swear by to help run your startup?

“Asana.”

What is something that surprised you about entrepreneurship?

“How much I love it every day — I wish I started when I was 20.”

How do you achieve work/life balance as a founder?

“I found a partner who knows there really is no such thing and loves it.”

What is a strategy you use to stay productive and focused?

“I delegate everything that does not need my brainpower.”

Did you have to develop any habits that helped lead you to success? If so, what are they?

“Personal: I take five minutes to ‘pray’ every morning, work out every morning, make sure I stay connected to wife and kids daily

Business: Systematize everything, including who is in charge of ordering lunch, [and] meet with the teams frequently.”
