Wix Website Builder Review

Is It An Expense or Asset?

Wix Website Builder ReviewDo you need to make a business website, but don’t have the budget for a web developer? If you’re not prepared to go DIY, how do you find that sweet spot of functionality and accessibility? With over a hundred million users, Wix is definitely worth considering.

In this Wix website builder review, we’ll weigh some of their pros and cons, pricing, features, customer reviews and more. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll know if they’re the best of the business website builders for you or if you should keep exploring. Enjoy!

Wix Pros & Cons

Pros

  1. With easy drag and drop design tools, it can be incredibly simple to build a basic, decent-looking website with performance to match.

  2. Their Artificial Design Intelligence analyzes trends in your preferences, using the resulting data to build your website from billions of layout/text formats. If you don’t want as much design work, it’s impressive how much Wix can get done with a few suggestions.

  3. On their website, you can find a super-helpful blog that’s updated nearly every day. There’s already a ton of great web design and small business tips, with more always on the way.

  4. Considering their variety of packages, Wix has a range of features to suit the needs of any business. Whether you’re a small operation or a major company that needs a comprehensive ecommerce website, they have a plan for you.

Cons

  1. Customer reviews are a mixed bag. They hold a 2.6-star rating out of 5 on SiteJabber and a 5.2 rating out of 10 on TrustPilot.

  2. While business website builders, including Wix, advertise themselves as the most user-friendly tools since silverware, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s easy. Designing a professional-grade and competitive business website on ANY platform is complex and time consuming if you’re not a designer!

Wix Pricing & Features

Wix gives you a whopping six packages to choose from. From their free service all the way to their VIP package with priority customer support, there’s something for every business.

This screenshot from their website breaks down the differences nicely.

Wix Pricing

There’s a lot to unpack, and it could get overwhelming if you don’t know exactly what features you need. That’s why we dig through it for you and focus on basics/essentials.

First, only the simplest of sites are possible with their free version. With 500MB of storage, 1GB of bandwidth, and a Wix web address (not your own domain), that’s not going to work for a serious company.

  • The $5/month Connect Domain plan is the exact same thing but with a custom domain name.
  • For $10 per month, the Combo package upgrades the bandwidth to 2GB and storage to 3GB, while also removing Wix ads.
  • The Unlimited plan is their most popular because for just $4 more than the Combo package, you get unlimited bandwidth, 10GB of storage, and some extra features.

For those that need an online store, there’s two packages which are laid out in an odd way. There’s no logical reason to choose eCommerce over VIP because your bandwidth is limited to 20GB. If you have no initial customers or traffic, that’s fine, but how soon will you need that bandwidth so your customers can use your store?

Our recommendation: If you’re not totally sure which plan is right for your business, start small and work your way up. This way you’ll be able to test out the platform with minimal investment.

Wix Customer Reviews

Wix customer feedback is mixed. On SiteJabber, they have a 2.6-star average out of 5 from 213 reviews, and on TrustPilot they score 5.2 out of 10 from 500 reviews. Here’s an example from SiteJabber:

Wix Customer Review

However, obviously with 100 million+ users, not everyone’s happy. This next customer is representative of most of their critical reviews.

Wix Customer Reviews 2

Reviews like this all come down to a lack of reading fine print on the customers part + not displaying the disclaimer at the right time on Wix’s part.

For example, someone just needed to explain to John there’s a difference between a “free website” with a Wix domain (meaning the URL has the word Wix in it), and purchasing your own domain that’s then “hosted” on Wix (so, www.JohnSite.com), and hosting isn’t free.

In general, Wix is a great tool but there are many users who feel it is more complex than it should be. If you have no experience with business website builders you should take your time and fully understand what you’re purchasing (and why). Tutorials can be a lifesaver.

How Wix Compares

Wix ComparisonIt goes without saying Wix is one of the top business website builders, but to be prudent let’s briefly look at how they compare to two other titans in the industry – Weebly and SquareSpace.

Weebly

  • If you need an online store, Weebly has some high-end features that Wix doesn’t. For example, their top-tier Performance package includes real-time shipping rates, abandoned cart emails, and gift cards.
  • Weebly makes it easier to experiment with and move between different themes. In fact, with Weebly you can even modify the HTML/CSS and customer-create your theme. Wix doesn’t allow this.

SquareSpace

  • One big differentiator has to do with mobile responsiveness. Meaning while Wix offers a mobile editor to help you make your sites look better for mobile devices, SquareSpace themes are responsive from the ground up.
  • In terms of customer support, the big difference is that SquareSpace has no phone support (and their live chat goes down from time to time). With Wix, at least you can call and talk to someone verbally. SquareSpace does however have extremely responsive email support.

Who’s our favorite? That’s tough, the answer depends on your resources and knowledge level. In general, SquareSpace has better themes, but Wix has the most themes to choose from. And, if you have a designer or just want something basic, Weebly is worth looking into.
