Any entrepreneur can tell you, launching a startup is a learning process. Therefore, one of the best things you can do prior to launching a startup of your own is to learn from those who have blazed the trail. Eric Grafstrom, founder of B2B startup ExitGuide, shared valuable insights during our interview that will inspire and motivate aspiring entrepreneurs.

Business Insights From the Founder of ExitGuide

What is your #1 piece of advice for startup founders?

“No one cares if you can build something. You have to build something people want and will pay money for. Before you do anything, talk to prospective customers to understand if this problem is big or just annoying.”

What is the best method you’ve found to avoid burnout as an entrepreneur?

“Exercise and connecting with people outside of tech, so conversations are about something other than work.”

What is your advice for coming up with a unique startup idea?

“Ideas are cheap, and most ideas evolve as you learn and grow. Focus on iterating and executing.”

What is your advice for overcoming challenges and failure?

“If looking like an idiot and failing is a problem then don’t become a founder. Treat everything as a learning experience that eliminates what does not work and is a step toward what does work. If something works the first time you probably got lucky and have a false signal.”

What is the biggest lesson you learned and what can aspiring entrepreneurs take from it?

“Be specific when asking for help. If your asks are very specific, people can help. If the ask is too broad, you won’t get help. People are busy and are not going to think of numerous ways to help you.”

What is your advice for entrepreneurs seeking funding for the first time?

“Do not try to jam all your information into a pitch deck or your elevator pitch. You want investors to lean in and ask questions, do try to answer questions they are not going to ask.”
