Washington Corporation Name Requirements

Key Guidelines

Washington has official requirements for its corporation names.

The name must contain the word “corporation,” “company,” “incorporated,” or “limited;” an abbreviation of one of these terms; or words or abbreviations in another language with the same meaning.

There are also restricted words, such as “FBI” or “Treasury,” that you cannot use in order to keep your LLC from sounding like an official institution.

Washington also restricts the following words and phrases:

  • bank, banking, banker, trust, cooperative, any combination of the words "industrial" and "loan," any combination of any two or more of the words "building," "savings," "loan," "home," "association," and "society," or any other words or phrases prohibited by any Washington state statute

For more information, check out the Washington state statute on corporation names.

Distinguishability

Your name must be distinguishable from all other Washington business names. In Washington, a distinguishable name is one that is substantively different from all other existing or reserved business names in the state.

The following differences do NOT make a name distinguishable in Washington:

  • Business entity type identifiers
  • Articles and conjunctions
  • Punctuation, capitalization, special characters
  • Abbreviations and plural forms of words

If your corporation name isn’t distinguishable, your Articles of Incorporation filing will likely be rejected.
