Shopify Website Builder Review

Is It Worth Investing In?

Shopify ReviewWondering whether it’s worth it to use any of the top business website builders? Do they really make it easier/cheaper to get a beautiful online store up and running? With their millions of active users, Shopify has definitely made a name for themselves within the world of ecommerce.

In this Shopify website builder review, we’ll take a look at some of their pros and cons, pricing, features, customer feedback and more. A couple minutes from now you’ll have a better idea whether they’re the best business website builder to suit your needs, or you should continue shopping around. Enjoy!

Shopify Pros & Cons

  1. They have the best customer reviews of any business website builder. For example, on GetApp Shopify sports an exceptional 4.4 rating out of 5, backed by nearly 400 reviews.

  2. As opposed to some competitors who are better for building blogs or agency/personal websites, Shopify is a leader in eCommerce stores. With their wide range of reliable, intuitive business tools, they’ve become a serious solution for any size company that sells real or digital goods.

  3. You can try their business website builder for free. Their 14-day trial is as no-strings-attached as they get — you don’t even need a credit card!

  4. These days there’s a Shopify app for just about anything you can imagine, from shipping and analytics, to marketing, sales, inventory, accounting, social media and more.

  5. Shopify’s online stores are packed with features. They offer a high-level of customization, inventory management and order fulfillment tools that make running your much smoother.

  6. Shopify hosts its shopping cart on a Level 1 PCI DSS compliant server to dramatically increase security. Also, aside from their Lite plan, all other packages offer 128-bit Free SSL certificates at no added cost!

  1. They aren’t the cheapest website builder for business. Ranging from $29 to $299 per month, they are definitely at the high end for pricing, but you do get what you pay for.

  2. Shopify continues to grow and respond to their customer needs and behaviors, but their SEO functionalities aren’t top of the line yet as regards URLs, blog posts, and regular pages.

  3. There are some complaints revolving around the fact you have to integrate an app ($17+ a month) to build a multilingual store.

  4. With so many apps, and there are a ton, it’s somewhat easy to get lost. This is also the case when dealing with super-elegant Shopify themes created by third-party developers.

Shopify Pricing & Features

Shopify offers three levels of business website builder services: Basic, Shopify and Advanced. We added the following screenshots of their packages and features so you can see how they break down.

Shopify Pricing & Features

There’s not a huge difference between these packages when it comes to rates and fees, but if you’re doing a large volume of transactions they add up quickly. Obviously most new startups begin at Basic and scale to Advanced over time as their needs grow, which Shopify makes fairly easy.

Now, instead of looking at all the common features, here’s four that we feel are really important for serious online store owners:

Shopify Features 1

And the following are what really differentiates the packages. Will you need professional reports and abandoned cart recovery to increase conversions? Probably. How about gift cards to get those initial sales rolling in?

Shopify Features 2

The Basic package is fully featured. All three packages come with a ton of helpful solutions like 24/7 support, fraud analysis and SSL certificates. The differences break down like this:

  • Basic ($29/mo): 2 staff accounts, good shipping discount (approx. 9%).
  • Shopify ($79/mo): 5 staff accounts, better shipping discount (approx. 10.5%).
  • Advanced ($299/mo): 15 staff accounts, best shipping discount (approx. 12%), all features from Shopify package, advanced report builder, third-party calculated shipping rates

Why the huge jump from $79 to $299? It has to do with volume. The users who opt for Advanced Shopify typically have a much larger operation and those rates mean big savings. Overall, our favorite is the middle-ground Shopify package. It has a great collection of features, most everything an ecommerce startup would need.

Shopify Customer Reviews

Shopify has fantastic customer reviews. For example, on the online review platform GetApp, Shopify sports an exceptional 4.4 rating out of 5, backed by nearly 400 reviews.

They’re also a BBB accredited business, with an A+ rating. Customers rave about their accessibility and ease of use as an eCommerce tool. Here’s an example:

Shopify Customer Reviews 1

Frankly, it isn’t easy to find significant criticism of Shopify, largely because it just doesn’t exist. There are a handful of 1 or 2-star ratings on GetApp, but the lowest score with an actual review attached is this three-star rating:

Shopify Customer Reviews 2

This user seems to require a tech-heavy product, as opposed to the beginner-friendly tools of Shopify’s business website builder. Also, keep in mind this is the absolute most critical review we could find and it’s still not bad from a business owner’s perspective, but a developer’s.

How Shopify Compares

Shopify ComparisonShopify is clearly one of the best business website builders. Their customer reviews can’t be beat and they represent top-rate eCommerce functionality. For the sake of being complete, let’s look at Wix and Weebly to see how they compare.

  • In terms of popularity, Wix wins with over 100 million users, or Wix websites out there. Shopify has about 400,000 ecommerce stores on its platform and growing. The difference is Shopify clearly wins for ecommerce, and Wix is great for blogs and personal/agency-based sites.
  • Wix has over 500 template designs, which is more than Shopify offers, but they’re not all mobile-friendly. With Wix, you can get a gorgeous blog up and running. With Shopify, their ecommerce themes are responsive and functional.

  • With Weebly, it’s super-simple to swap out themes and experiment with them. It’s the least-expensive option that still allows you to customize the HTML/CSS on your site without using third-party developers.
  • Their top-tier Performance website builder package includes premium features — like real-time shipping updates, gift cards and abandoned cart emails — for a lower price tag than Shopify.

Which one is the best for you? It’s a tough call, because each provider has their upsides and challenges, and it really does come down to the unique needs of your business. Generally, Weebly is a great balance of features and price for any website, but Shopify leads the ecommerce space specifically.
