The emergence of wireless technologies, smart products and complete software solutions, also commonly known as the Internet of Things is set to play a central role in intensifying the volume of data that is being collected.
EMC Corporation announced results of the EMC seventh Digital Universe in measuring and projecting the amount of data generated in each year. The study, entitled “The Digital Universe of Opportunities: Rich Data and Increasing the Value of the Internet of Things” was conducted by IDC (International Data Corporation) revealed how the emergence of wireless technology, smart products, and software-defined businesses play an important role in improving the volume of data in the world.
As this is part of the Internet of Things, the digital universe has doubled every two years and may be increased 10-fold between 2013 and 2020 from 4.4 trillion to 44 trillion gigabytes. As the perspective of the amount of information in a digital data, today the digital universe is mainly being driven by people, and that’s one of the highlights out of the analysis. Two thirds of information is generated or captured by consumers who are accessing a website or sending an email, yet 85 percent of that is being stored by a company.
IDC identifies nearly 200 billion objects with the ability to connect to the Internet, only 7 percent who already communicate via Internet and 2 percent that produce data. In addition to the amount of data, it is the problem of managing and analyzing problematic data. In 2013, only 22 percent of digital data were usable and only 5 percent were analyzed.
Such a mass of data opens up many opportunities for companies to be able to manage, store, monetize, but also provide strong data security. Also according to the study, there are only 20 percent of the data that are currently protected. In addition, the digital market is particularly currently limited to industrialized countries, but emerging countries will quickly produce more data than developed countries. A report should be reversed by 2020 with Brazil, China, India, Mexico and Russia playing the central role. IDC estimates that by 2020, the number of Internet-connected devices will grow to 30 billion and 10 percent of them represent the data in the world today.
In 2020, more than 35 percent of the data can be regarded as useful data, thanks to the growth of the data from the Internet of Things, but everything will depend on the business use of the data. This phenomenon will provide the latest revolutionary way how to interact with customers, shorten the growth cycle, and reduce operating costs and to encourage business opportunities in the value of trillions of dollars.
The amount of storage capacity available in the world (for example, bytes are not used) from all types of media grows more slowly than the digital universe. In the year 2013, available storage capacity can only save 33 percent of the digital universe of data. By 2020, available storage only will be able to save less than 15 percent.
The study also found that the data is touched by the cloud will increase. In 2013, less than 20 percent of data in the digital universe has been touched by cloud. In 2020 this percentage will increase to 40 percent. Two-thirds of the data in the digital universe is created or generated from consumers and workers, but the enterprise is responsible for generating 85 percent of the digital universe data.
EMC recommends a good preparation for this growth by creating a position responsible for developing new digital business opportunities, create teams that include changes in the digital landscape, and establish investment models in line with the development of new technologies and skills. One of the solutions put forward by EMC is the ability to place data in transit, like video streams that do not need to be stored permanently.
