GM Unveils New Chevy Bolt EV, SUV Starting at $34,000

General Motors (GM) announced it is rolling out a new Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle (EV) and a new, bigger version of Chevy named “Chevrolet Bolt EUV.”

Starting at $34,000

Both cars are expected to go on sale later this year and are part of the company’s target to launch 30 electric vehicles in the next four years. The main difference is that the new electric utility vehicle (EUV) has a larger hatchback than the standard Chevy Bolt.

“We want to put everyone in an EV and the new Bolt EUV and redesigned Bolt EV are crucial to doing so,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “Together, they enable mainstream customers to be part of our vison of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.”

EUV’s wheelbase is around three inches longer, while in total, it is about six inches longer than Chevrolet Bolt EV. In other words, Chevy EUV represents a crossover that has 39.1 inches of rear-seat legroom.

"It has SUV proportions, it has SUV styling," said Jesse Ortega, the chief engineer of the two Bolts. "I wouldn't buy into idea it has to have four-wheel drive to be an SUV."

Moreover, the Chevy EUV will also become the first Chevrolet to include a hands-free driver assistance system named Super Cruise. However, this feature will not be available in the base version of the EUV, which will cost $33,995. Those who want Super Cruise will have to upgrade beyond that price.

The car business said the EUV’s estimated range is 250 miles, slightly less than the Bolt EV. The EUV will also include a standard dual-level charge cord with a changeable plug, allowing the drivers to choose between 120V and 240V charging.

The Chevy EUV will also include native navigation. This is an important addition because the First Chevrolet Bolt that launched in 2016 utilizes Android Auto or Apple CarPlay for maps and directions.

However, neither Chevrolet Bolt EV nor Chevrolet Bolt EUV will include the company’s new battery platform Ultium, introduced last year. Ultium was built to support a large number of products across its brands, such as compact cars, work trucks, large premium SUVs, and performance vehicles.

Apart from EUV, the car business is also rolling out a refreshed version of the Chevrolet Bolt, which came to markets over four years ago. The new Chevrolet Bolt has a base price of $31,995, which makes it a few thousand dollars cheaper than the new Bolt EUV. The car company said that the new Chevy bolt includes an updated modern interior and “more comfortable” bucket seating.

While many features are similar to the 2016 version, the new Chevy Bolt has a center console that enables one-pedal driving. When the console is engaged, the driver depresses the accelerator pedal to accelerate, and when the foot leaves the pedal, the car’s brakes kick in and stop the vehicle.

GM said on Sunday that it will be launching a new version of Chevrolet Bolt EV, as well as a bigger crossover named Chevrolet Bolt EUV, in summer this year.
