EV Battery Companies to Watch for in 2021

By Thomas Price Tuesday, February 2, 2021

The changes in environmental policies and shifting attitudes toward climate change and carbon emissions have led to a major spike in electric vehicle (EV) sales in recent years — especially as more companies enter the mix. This shift has created a higher demand for longer-lasting and more efficient batteries to power electric vehicles from a variety of different battery manufacturing companies. Considering that many different EV companies are projected to continue to grow, the EV battery manufacturing companies that power these cars will grow as well.

Electric car components found under the hood.

Panasonic Corporation

The most valuable EV car company in the world is Tesla, and thus without question, one of the most important EV battery manufacturing companies in 2021 is the Panasonic Corporation. While Panasonic Corporation is well-known for business done in a variety of industries, including televisions, microwaves, refrigerators, lights, computers, and electrical wiring, the company’s relationship with Tesla is where their batteries come into play. In fact, Panasonic and Tesla recently signed another agreement for the company to continue to supply batteries for the EV manufacturer through 2022. This partnership will be mutually beneficial for both companies and will secure their business in the future.

LG Chem

LG Chem is another one of the biggest companies in the battery manufacturing business. With business agreements to manufacture batteries for EV companies such as Hyundai, General Motors, Tesla, Volvo, and Chinese company Geely, LG Chem is one of the most prolific battery makers in the entire world. With a joint venture in the works for opening an entirely new factory in Indonesia with Hyundai, the company has some lofty plans ahead as it grows along with the EV market.

Contemporary Amperex Technology

Contemporary Amperex Technology, or CATL, has been the largest battery manufacturing business for several years now. With the company supplying batteries to several of the most important EV companies, such as Tesla, Volvo, and the massive Chinese car manufacturer Nio, CATL has proven itself to be the premier name in the industry. The company is well set up to stay atop the EV battery industry in the future with its recent $6 billion investment in lithium-ion battery projects looking to see fruition soon and Nio launching a battery-as-a-service business with the company.

Johnson Matthey Battery Systems

Johnson Matthey Battery Systems has long been a business within the automotive world known mostly for their catalytic converters and specialty chemicals. Their business expansion into battery development for electric vehicles has also proven fruitful. In fact, Jaguar and Land Rover are already planning to use Johnson Matthey for their electric vehicles lineup. Furthermore, the company looks to see considerable growth in its battery sector in 2021 and beyond.
