- With LegalZoom, you get more than just document forwarding. As your registered agent, they also provide a Compliance Calendar to notify you of important filing deadlines, scan and copy all docs, and inform you immediately by phone if you receive a court summons. No surprises!
- They serve an incredible volume of customers, with nearly 4 million customers served since 1999. LegalZoom is one of the most popular online legal services around.
- Their satisfaction guarantee gives you the option of a full refund of all fees paid to LegalZoom within 60 days of purchase, no questions asked.
- If saving money is your top priority, LegalZoom might not be your best option. At $159 per year, their service is reasonably priced, but there are cheaper alternatives like Northwest Registered Agent which is $125/year.
- Customer feedback is a mixed bag, which isn’t surprising for a company so large. The higher the volume of customers, the higher the odds some of them won’t be satisfied.
LegalZoom’s registered agent service has a straightforward $159 annual fee with no optional features or additional fees. While many competitors can beat their prices, LegalZoom does provide some additional features beyond simple document forwarding.
In addition to allowing you to set your own business hours, a registered agent provides you with a layer of privacy as an owner and helps avoid fines. LegalZoom offers a bit more.
I like how they provide a courtesy call prior to sending any court documents, and the Compliance Calendar makes sure you never miss a deadline. Not all of their competitors provide these features at no extra charge, and some providers don’t offer them at all.
So, yes, LegalZoom is a bit more expensive than many competitors but you are getting more of a premium registered agent service compared to some other providers.
Feedback for LegalZoom isn’t the greatest, with a mixed bag of reviews from their many customers. The issues mentioned in their more critical reviews are pretty typical of a company this size: inconsistent customer service, billing issues, etc. As for their happy customers, they praise LegalZoom’s efficiency and thank specific support reps for their assistance.
Customer Reviews Section Last Updated 8-7-17
- SiteJabber: 2.9/5 out of 598 reviews
- Yelp: 1.0/5 out of 51 reviews
- BBB: A+ out of 33 reviews
- Consumer Affairs: 2.1/5 out of 25 reviews
Conclusion: LegalZoom has hundreds of customer reviews to read through, and they’re basically split down the middle between satisfied and critical customers. As I mentioned earlier, it’s awfully difficult to handle such a high volume of customers and keep everyone happy, so I don’t necessarily see this as a pro or a con.
Considering all the hours I’ve spent researching registered agent providers, I’ve realized that some of them offer more for your money than others. Of course, the goal is still to determine which service hits the sweet spot of features and pricing for your company.
LegalZoom is a good choice to serve as your registered agent because of their premium features like a Compliance Calendar, and due to their wide popularity in the industry. Still, it’s always a good idea to see what the competition’s doing, so let’s also take a look at my personal favorite, Northwest Registered Agent.
Pricing: Northwest Registered Agent starts their pricing at $125 for each state (up to 3 states). If you need service in more states, they discount their rate to $115 for the 4th through 9th states, and cut it further to $100 for each state after that. LegalZoom has a flat $159 per year price for registered agent services.
Features: These two services are nearly identical in their feature sets, as both companies offer annual report and other compliance reminders, as well as immediate notifications when you receive important legal documents.
Customer Support: Northwest Registered Agent built their entire reputation on having excellent customer support. Their reps are knowledgeable, friendly and easy to get ahold of. LegalZoom’s customer service gets mixed reviews, as they’re such a large company that it would be difficult to hire consistently great support agents across the board.
Experience: With nearly 4 million customers served since 1999, LegalZoom has longevity and volume that are tough to top. Northwest Registered Agent was founded in 1998, but they handle a smaller volume of customers to be able to provide a personal touch to their services.
The key thing to keep in mind here is that Northwest Registered Agent has literally specialized with registered agent services for the last 20 years, while LegalZoom offers a tremendous number of services. So you could argue that if you’re looking for the best registered agent service, maybe you should work with a specialist company.

Can I Act As My Own Registered Agent?
In some states, you can designate your own registered agent from within your company. In others, you’ll need to either work with a private accredited individual, or top registered agent services like LegalZoom.
What Happens if I Don’t Have a Registered Agent?
Operating a business without a registered agent isn’t advised. You could be prohibited from doing business, fall out of good standing with your state of formation, lose limited liability status or even face stiff fines. In short, it’s not worth the risk.
Can I Change Registered Agents?
Yes you can, but check with your state on what their process is. You might need to fill out state-specific documents or pay a change fee.
LegalZoom gets a 4.3/5 in my book for their registered agent services. We like their advanced features like Compliance Calendar, and their volume of customers is impressive.
