How to Search Available LLC Names in Kansas

1. Check Kansas LLC Naming Guidelines

Before you do a name availability search, it makes sense to check if your business name meets the basic state guidelines.

Some key guidelines for Kansas LLC names include:

  • Your name must include one of the following terms or abbreviations: Limited Liability Company, Limited Company, L.L.C., L.C., LLC, or LC.

  • Your name can include the name of a member or manager of the LLC.

  • Your name can also include one of the following words: Company, Association, Club, Foundation, Fund, Institute, Society, Union, Syndicate, Limited, and Trust.

  • Your name must be distinguishable from any existing business in the state.

Keep an eye out for restricted words. These words, such as “FBI” or “Treasury,” are often restricted to keep your LLC from sounding like an official institution.

For more information, check out Kansas’s official state statutes.

2. Complete an LLC Business Name Search

Once you know your LLC name meets Kansas guidelines, it’s time to make sure it’s available by using the Kansas Name Availability Search tool.

It is important that your name be distinguishable from all other business names. In Kansas, this means the name may look or sound similar, but a small difference in spelling or the addition of one extra letter or word is enough to qualify it as distinguishable.

In addition to different words or spellings, the following differences are considered sufficient to make a name distinguishable in Kansas:

  • Plural forms versus singular forms of words
  • Numbers versus words representing numbers

The following differences are NOT considered when determining if a name is distinguishable:

  • Business entity type suffixes
  • The inclusion of An, And, &, The, To, With
  • Inclusion of “a,” if used as an article

Failure to use a distinguishable name could result in your formation filing being rejected.
