Insights From the Founder of Software Startup Commissionly

Commissionly co-founder, Patrick McCarthy.

Any entrepreneur can tell you, launching a startup is a learning process. Therefore, one of the best things you can do prior to launching a startup of your own is to learn from those who have blazed the trail. We were fortunate enough to hear some valuable insights during our interview with Patrick McCarthy of Commissionly that will inspire, motivate, and teach aspiring and established entrepreneurs alike.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

“Don't be afraid to try. Share responsibility and surround yourself with people that compliment your vision and goals.”

What is your advice for coming up with a unique startup idea?

“Do your research. It's the old adage of ‘measure twice and cut once.’ You can waste a lot of time and money going after an idea that could never survive going up against incumbents with more resources and reputation.

Once you have made the decision, follow through. See it through to the end. It takes grit and hard work. Don't be afraid to pivot.

Make sure you have the time and energy to dedicate to a project.”

What is your advice for overcoming challenges and failure?

“Learn from your mistakes. All the advice I have given above are lessons I have learned. If you give it your all and it still fails, you can still be proud of the effort. If you invest money and time only to do something half-baked, you will have regrets.”

What is the biggest lesson you learned and what can aspiring entrepreneurs take from it?

“DO YOUR RESEARCH. Understand your market. Look at the competition. Be sure you have a competitive edge that you will be able to articulate above all the noise of the tech startup industry. Ask people that are not your friends what they think. Friends generally say the idea is great. You want a mentor that will give honest feedback which could be a harsh reality.”
