How to Search Available LLC Names in Georgia

1. Check Georgia LLC Naming Guidelines

Before you do a name availability search, it makes sense to check if your business name meets the basic state guidelines.

Some key guidelines for Georgia LLC names include:

  • Your name must contain one of the following terms or abbreviations: limited liability company, limited company, L.L.C., LLC, L.C., or LC. It is permitted to abbreviate the word "limited" as "ltd." and the word "company" as "co."

  • Your name must be distinguishable from all other entities on file with the Georgia Secretary of State.

  • Your name cannot exceed 80 characters.

Keep an eye out for restricted words. These words, such as “FBI” or “Treasury,” are often restricted to keep your LLC from sounding like an official institution.

Georgia also has the following restrictions:

  • Your name cannot contain language implying that the corporation is organized for an unlawful purpose or one not stated in its articles of incorporation; it also cannot include anything the Secretary of State determines is obscene.

  • You need approval from the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner to use the following words: insurance, assurance, surety, fidelity, reinsurance, reassurance, or indemnity.

  • You need approval from the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance to use the following words: bank, banc, banque, banker, banking company, banking house, bancorp, bankruptcy, credit union, savings & loan, trust, or trust company.

  • You need approval from the Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission to use the words “college” or “university.”

For more information, check out the Georgia Secretary of State website.

2. Complete an LLC Business Name Search

Once you know your LLC name meets Georgia guidelines, it’s time to make sure it’s available by using the Georgia Business Name Search tool.

It is important that your name be distinguishable from all other business names. In Georgia, a distinguishable name is one that is substantially different from another name.

The following differences do NOT make a name distinguishable in Georgia:

  • Articles at the beginning of the name
  • Business type suffixes
  • The word “and” and ampersands (&)
  • Punctuation
  • Plural forms of words
  • Abbreviations
  • Phonetic differences in spelling

Failure to use a distinguishable name could result in your formation filing being rejected.

How to Reserve or Register Your Business Name

Reserve Your Name

You can optionally reserve your LLC name in Georgia for up to 30 days before you officially register it. This prevents other businesses from registering your name until you have the opportunity to register it yourself.

Name reservations can be filed online or by mail with the Georgia Secretary of State. The filing fee is $25 for online filings and $35 for mail filings.

You are permitted to reserve the name again after your initial 30-day reservation expires if the name is still available.

Register Your Name

If you want to register a legal entity name for your LLC, you can do so at the time of formation filing. Georgia provides a section for your desired LLC name on the Articles of Organization.

Registering a DBA (doing business as) name, known as a trade name in Georgia, is a separate process that requires filing with the county or counties where you do business.
